First timers the key to success

Now that Oprah has left the building, all is in readiness for the expected influx of international tourists once her shows are aired around the world in January.

And it's first time travellers who will be in the sights of Tourism Australia (TA).

Travel Today reported that of the 288 US citizens Winfrey brought with her to Australia, around 200 had never left the US.

TA's marketing campaign is expected to be centred around convincing first time international travellers that Australia should be the place to start.

The first lady of television said that a trip to Australia is a daunting prospect to many Americans.

“In the US, the most desired place is Hawaii. People save their whole lives to go there, to go on honeymoon there and vacation there. So Australia to them is big, big, big; it’s the other side of the world,” Oprah said.

“When your whole vacation experience is a barbeque in your brother-in-law’s house, imagine what they’ll think of Australia,” she said.

In a moment of refreshing candour, Federal tourism minister, Martin Ferguson, said that he had "learnt long ago" people talking about their experiences was much more effective than anything tourism ministers, tourism boards, or airlines could do to promote a location.

“Millions of people all over the world have never heard of Uluru and they'll hear about the amazing spiritual impact it left on me, they'll hear about the Blue Mountains, of Hamilton Island,” Oprah said.
