Hundreds expected at Sugar Wharf tonight

Even though it's only in its second year, the Port Catering and Events Communal Christmas Party is already becoming a tradition for locals to let their hair down after another year slides past.

More than 300 people attended last year's shindig, and organisers say they are well on their way to reaching that target again which will bring Christmas festivities to the Sugar Wharf tonight.

Cathy Alexander from Port Douglas Catering and Events said the evening is a great way for employers to reward staff, and to catch up with some familiar faces.

"It's a whole bunch of locals coming together and a lot of small businesses use it as their Christmas party," she said. "It's also about the venue, a lot of locals don't get the chance to enjoy the Sugar Wharf as it's normally booked for private events."

Tickets are $65 which includes as much of that delicious Port Douglas Catering food as you can eat, a drink on arrival, a chance to win a lucky door prize, and entertainment from Tony George.

"He's a four piece rock covers band who also played last year," Ms Alexander said. "He's a really popular act in this area and can read the crowd really well and gets people up and dancing."

The festivities won't be dampened by any unexpected rain as both the outdoor and indoor areas of the Sugar Wharf will be used.

The party kicks off at 6pm and will run until midnight, with tickets able to be purchased through Port Douglas Catering and Events on 4099 4233, or at the door if not already sold out.

So get involved, say hello to some old friends, and enjoy a well earned cocktail or Christmas shooter (nobody drinks egg nog anymore).
