Sheraton awarded but rumours persist

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas has been highlighted as one of Queensland’s finest hotels achieving success at the 2010 Queensland Hotel Association (QHA) Awards of Excellence.

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas was awarded Best Function Operations Facility.

“This is a great accolade for the resort and its dedicated associates. The awards pay tribute to Queensland’s leading hotels and highlights Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas’s continued commitment to deliver a superior level of service and event experience to our valued guests” said General Manager, Lachlan Walker.

The resort has been the subject of continued speculation regarding its impending sale. The latest in a long line of rumours circulate around Melbourne developer David Marriner, however Wayne Bunz, the agent for the sale, could not be contacted for confirmation.

Mr Marriner sparked a controversy earlier this year when his application for approval of an international airport at his Laguna Whitsundays Resort was rejected.

At the time Mr Marriner was quoted as saying "A southern developer, a Mexican as they call me, who isn't prepared to play the game is clearly not welcome – even if the development is in the interests of the region."

He was reported in the Courier Mail as saying that the felt his money would be safer in South America, which he said had less corrupt processes and procedures than Queensland.
