More fireworks in Port Douglas

The fireworks spectacular which has become engrained in the tradition of New Year's Eve in Port Douglas will again light up the night sky to see in 2011, with the help of local businesses.

President of the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Ken Dobbs, said the Chamber has received strong support with funding to date.

"The fireworks are being facilitated by the Chamber and has $6,000 of the $12,000 needed which has been collectively pledged by Cairns Regional Council, The Courthouse Hotel, Port Douglas and District Combined Club and the Chamber.

"We are hoping to have two displays – 9am and midnight in Anzac Park as for previous years. This can only happen if we get the support of business and community," Mr Dobbs said.

"The Chamber undertakes the fireworks because many visitors come to our town for this occasion and they have an expectation of some event to mark the transition to a new year.

"Visitors mean business and that is a function of the Chamber. Our local community also benefits in celebrating the new year."

The Chamber has called on businesses and individuals who can make a contribution to this event to donate via the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce website.

"All donations will be acknowledged in the media prior to 31 December 2010 so our community will know who is making it happen," Mr Dobbs said.

The Chamber has also been in discussions with the Council on putting some Christmas atmosphere into the town centre over the festive period including lighting in Rotary Park and Macrossan Street.

Mr Dobbs urged Macrossan Street businesses to complement this with some festive decoration on their shopfronts.
