Tamika set to join dancing elite
Bodies in Motion Dance School has another reason to celebrate. On the back of recent success stories of student and teacher Saskia Turner being accepted into RAW Dance Company, and student Sena Fujiwara being accepted into Australian Ballet School’s ITP Programme, another student has launched herself into the metropolitan dance world.
Tamika Pitt is one of only 25 students from around Australia to be accepted into the exclusive Queensland Dance School of Excellence (QDSE) in Brisbane. Earlier this year Tamika submitted her audition via video only to hear last week that she has been accepted.
Tamika said she has wanted to expand on the dance training she has received from Bodies in Motion Dance school over the past nine years and is "nervous and excited" at the thought of moving to Brisbane next year.
"It means I can be involved in intense daily training to improve my technique and performance qualities," she said.
"I can't wait to get there and begin the program, although it's going to be a bit nerve-racking making new friends.
"My family have been a huge support with what I want to do with my life and I thank them for always being there and giving me the push I need.
"I would also like to thank my dance teachers Prue and Saskia for teaching me over the past couple of years. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be where I am today."
The QDSE, which operates in partnership with Queensland Ballet and Kelvin Grove State College, was first established to give talented dance students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to combine academic studies with full-time dance training at a professional level.
The Diploma in Dance course is conducted over two years with students participating in four hours of dance training every morning and three hours of academic studies in the afternoon.
The course provides students with exceptional training in technique, performance, body conditioning, injury prevention and also dance theory.
This is an amazing opportunity for Tamika, a stepping stone into some of the world’s best ballet and dance companies.
Former QDSE graduates are now soloists in The Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet, Dance North, Bangarra Dance Theatre, English National Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, the Moulin Rouge among others.
Bodies in Motion Principal Prue Borzi is extremely excited for her students.
“I know I’ve said it before, but it really doesn’t matter where you live. If you have good technical grounding, work hard and always aim to be the very best at what you do, you will succeed.
"To know that my students are among the top dancers in the country is an amazing feeling! I wish them all the best and can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.”
This year’s Bodies in Motion concert will be the last one for dancers Saskia and Tamika. They are in the final weeks of preparation and say that they can’t wait to finish their amazing year with a bang.
