Snapper to get some TLC

Tangaroa Blue Ocean Care Society are organising a clean up of Snapper Island on 14 November, and are looking for volunteers (and volunteers with boats) to help restore some beauty to the island.

Tangaroa Blue's Heidi Taylor said there is a real need for regular clean ups of the Island.

"Rubbish is a major problem on Snapper Island due to its location at the mouth of the Daintree River, and the wind direction which works to accumulate debris," she said.

"Last September we collected close to 500kg of rubbish in one day."

And it's not just Snapper Island which needs attention. Tangaora Blue volunteers work at Four Mile, Newell, Wonga, and Cooya beaches.

"We worked with students from St Augustine's Primary School in Mossman at Cooya Beach last week and picked up 135kg of rubbish in just one hour," Heidi said.

Heidi is encouraging people to get involved so if you would like to volunteer your time or your boat to help keep our beaches clean, contact Heidi on 0410 166 684, or email heidi@oceancare.org.au.
