Riders raise thousands for kids

A perfect day greeted riders of all abilities as they challenged themselves in the name of charity by riding from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation, and in some cases all the way back again.

Event organiser, Lesley Stephens, said she was proud of the community for supporting the event which raised $7,000 for Whitelion, a not-for profit organisation established by former champion AFL footballer Glen Manton which helps young people build better lives for themselves.

"It's the best place in the world," she said of Port Douglas. "We had 90 riders, and the support crews made sure they were well hydrated, fed and safely escorted to and from Cape Tribulation."

Riders could attempt the 90km push to Cape Tribulation, or the gruelling 180km round trip back to Port Douglas.

"Some of us gratefully accepted the offer of a lift up the two steep parts, and everyone either made it to PK's, or for the lion hearted, back to the Port Douglas Surf Club, exhausted but very happy," Ms Stephens said.

And it wasn't just professional or avid riders who took to the long road north, some participants borrowed a bike in order to take part.

But it wasn't all smooth sailing for participants. "Probably the most amusing thing was coming upon a red traffic light smack in the middle of the world heritage road through Cape Trib, and having to dismount to wait for the light to change," she said.

Ms Stephens wished to express her sincere thanks to a number of people for their support including Deborah Mather, Matt Mills, Robin Gold and Billie, Annie Hardy, Melissa Cussel, Geoff Parmenter, Zoey and Barry Gray.

Also a big thumbs up to Braden and Leroy from Port Douglas Bicycle Hire and Thor from Port Douglas Bikeworks who bought the many bicycles back from Cape Tribulation, and Sun Palm who very kindly transported the cyclists.
