Planning the key to storm safety

Like the fire season in the south, it's important to plan and prepare early for any cyclones and severe storms that may visit our area.

The forthcoming wet season has been identified by the Bureau of Meteorology as being one that is likely to see significant active weather fronts, including cyclones, that have a high risk of causing floods in our region.

Recently, the Minister of Emergency Services, Neil Roberts, made public announcements to the effect that people of Queensland should make preparations for adverse weather conditions, and have in place strategies for dealing with situations that affect their community.

The Department of Community Safety have extensive plans in place for such emergencies, and the Port Douglas/Mossman unit would like to invite you to attend 'Cyclone Prepared, Cyclone Ready', a presentation aimed at educating our community on storm preparedness.

Demand for the presentation has been high, resulting in a move to a larger venue.

"Due to the increase in numbers of people that wish to attend the presentation, the management of the Sheraton Mirage Resort in Port Douglas have kindly offered a larger conference room for the evening," Intensive Care Paramedic, Craig Downing said.

The presentation will be held at 7pm on Thursday, 28 October, and Mr Downing requested those who would like to attend the presentation to contact him by 22 October at Craig.Downing@dcs.qld.gov.au.
