Water experts Black & Veatch have been given the task of preparing the protocol for a chlorine free water trial for the Mossman Township.


According to a media release from Cairns Regional Council, they awarded the tender to the global engineering, consulting and construction firm after considering tender submissions from three major companies. 


A successful trial will be the first step toward returning the Mossman water supply to chlorine free status.


Mayor Val Schier said Council recognises the will of the community to return to chemical free water supply.


“The Douglas Community Water Reference Group requested that external experts assist in establishing a plan for the trial. Council has responded by finding the very best consultants for the job,” Cr Schier said.


Council prepared a draft protocol for a chlorine free trial in late 2009 that was reviewed by Queensland Health. In response, the state authority outlined significant improvements required to ensure the submission met with the Queensland Health guidelines.


“Council has taken on board suggestions made earlier this year by Professor Don Bursill.  We have chosen experts with considerable international experience in running chlorine free water supplies to advise us.”


Division 10 Cr Julia Leu said Black & Veatch were a company that had worked in the Netherlands and the United States with town water supplies successfully run without the addition of chlorine.


“While there is still a long way to go to return the water supply to a chlorine free state, engaging a company with this level of expertise is a positive step,” Cr Leu said.


As well as finalising the protocol the consultants will be reviewing the infrastructure, operations and maintenance procedures of the Mossman water supply. 


The water experts will also advise Council on what is required to allow the trial to proceed. Black & Veatch will consult with the Reference Group and Queensland Health to ensure all areas of community concern are addressed.
