Telemarketer scam alert

An alert has been issued from the Australian Communications and Media Authority, warning people of a new scam regarding the Do Not Call Register.

The warning comes as dishonest telemarketers are offering to add your phone number to the free register, for a fee of course.

‘The Do Not Call Register is a free service provided by the Australian Government,’ said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman.

He urged people who receive these calls not to give any personal or financial details.

‘If you receive a call from someone offering to list your number on the Do Not Call Register for a fee, we recommend you get as much information as possible from the caller and lodge a complaint with us by calling 1300 792 958 or by logging on to www.donotcall.gov.au.

More than 30 complaints have been received by the ACMA so far, but the figure of people approached by these unscrupulous operators is obviously much higher.

To register legitimately for the Do Not Call Register phone 1300 792 958 or go to the Do Not Call website.
