Free tennis is ace, says Mayor

The Cairns region’s residents will have the chance watch pro tennis, live and up close, in a week long series of free admission matches coinciding with the opening of the brand new Cairns International Tennis Centre.

From now until 11 September, the Cairns International Pro Tournament will give tennis fans the opportunity to see top class players ply their on-court skills.

Free admission to the matches is available daily from 8am and each evening under lights from 5pm.

The tournament attracted some talent including New Zealand Davis Cup representative Daniel King-Turner, Australian Olivia Rogowska, and junior Wimbledon runner-up Ben Mitchell.

Mayor Val Schier said the event was an exciting start to three weeks of great tennis, as the Davis Cup will take place in the following week.

“The International showcases the new centre and involves residents in a week of community focused tennis events,” Cr Schier said.

The Mayor will officially welcome players, officials, delegates and visitors at an official launch celebration at the Court House Hotel this Sunday.

“The Cairns International Tournament schedule aims to reach the entire community through a week of inclusive special events.

"There will be a coaching day lead by the great Evonne Goolagong for aspiring indigenous girls visiting far northern communities and a coaching day for the region’s juniors,” the Mayor said.
