Reef run-off deadline approaching

North Queensland farmers are being told to complete Environmental Risk Management plans by the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM), but it may be easier said than done.

By 30 September cane and cattle farmers in north Queensland are required to have a plan in place to reduce the risk of sediment, herbicides, fertilisers and other agricultural chemicals being flushed into the water systems and impacting the Great Barrier Reef.

Bob Speares, spokesman of DERM, said "What we're looking to do is try and draw the line,"

"The law requires this work gets done (but) we know it's not the only thing on your plate."

Local cane farmer, Doug Rasmussen, said many farmers will experience difficulties with the process, "The paperwork is very long and comprehensive and the average cane farmer will need professional help as some of the terminology is very confusing." he said.

DERM says it is willing to negotiate with farmers on the deadline for these environmental risk management plans.

"We also expect you to take it really seriously and do your best to get in on time and if you're going to need a day or two longer then you'll have to negotiate that up-front." Mr Speares said.
