NAIDOC week commences in Mossman

by Mat Churchill

More that 100 people gathered at the Cairns Regional Council's Mossman offices yesterday to welcome in NAIDOC week with the traditional flag raising ceremony.

With the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Island flags proudly displayed, Janice Walker gave a heartfelt speech which included the welcome to the country, and recognised previous generations who have earned our respect.

"Reflect on who has made you, helped you, and encouraged you," she said and added her support to the 'unsung hero' theme.

Eric Pitt spoke of the hard work of the indigenous cane workers in the 1950's who helped build the industry.

When Cr Julia Leu spoke, she reflected on the natural beauty of the Mossman area and the positive influence of the Kuku Yalanji people who have shared their stories of strength, endurance, and character.

MC, Terrence Gibson, who has been involved in NAIDOC week for the past three years also called more people to get involved in their community to help continue to improve the area for all its residents.
