Mirage Police Golf day set to be annual event

The inaugural Port Douglas Police Charity Golf day held at The Mirage Country Club was an outstounding success.

70 golfers entered the competition including locals and visiting holidaymakers who were lucky enough to be here to enjoy the superb facilities and perfect golfing weather.

The competition took the form of a duo ambrose with most almost every hole at the shotgun start having two couples playing together to add to the social event that the local police had planned it to be.

The Charity the event was supporting was the Port Douglas Neigbourhood centre, that does such good work within the community.  The tireless team from The Neighbourhood Centre had a sausage sizzle sizzling from the very beginning of the day ensuring everyone was nicely fed before the exertions of an 18 hole round on the golf course even began.

The Mirage staff were on hand to effortlessly register everyone, get them kitted out with clubs and a cart and guide them to their starting blocks before the fun could began.

The Newsport Daily sponsored the 17th hole and held a mini competition to see who could chip a golf ball from about 5mtrs away into their specially beer filled esky, courtesy of the Court House hotel. Only four golfers managed the feat, well five if you include Danny Hanly from Paradise wheels who made up his own rules!

Danny in fact, was in the foursome that included his 92 yr old pal Jack Porter who looked in far better shape at the end of the round than his three considerably younger compatriots.

The winning twosome, The Stawoods, were a father and son duo from down south.  They both agreed that "The course was a wonderful experience to play, a really competitive course with a unique and beautiful landscaped environment and obviously well cared for".

Event organiser Leigh Marriott said at the presentations "A great day and special thanks to all the local businesses who supported us on our first charity day.  Now we've had this first event and it's proved itself such a success, I'm sure the local business community will get behind it even more for next year".

There was no doubt in any of the organisers minds that this was just the beginning and that it would stand up strongly as an annual event.
Mirage Country Club Manager, Kerrie Jamieson said "It was wonderful day all round, even our resident crocs enjoyed the show."

Head of Station, Sgt Damian Meadows said, "Fantastic day, I'm pleased for Leigh that we got the numbers on the day.  This has got to be an annual event".

The final tally of the amount raised has yet to be confirmed but on the day over $2,000 was collected, which will be a welcome boost to the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre funds.
