Ex-Wallabies to play in Cairns charity match

On Saturday, 10 July you’ll have the chance to see in action a number of former Wallabies (and a former All Black) who have accepted an invitation from the Cairns Old Crocs Rugby Union Club to play in the Gold Legends Invitational Charity Match against a Cairns Barbarians XV.

OK, this event may be happening a little bit south of Port, but we know all you rugby union fans would want to know!  It's being held at Barlow Park in Cairns from 6pm with all proceeds from the game and other events going to Make-A-Wish® Australia and to support local junior rugby union development.

The President of the Cairns Old Crocs Peter “Richo” Richardson stated “This would be a real boost to rugby in Cairns and swell the coffers of the beneficiaries of the fundraising”.

Some 17 players have confirmed their intention to come and play.  They include Owen Finegan (a winning World Cup player), Pat Howard, Warwick Waugh, David Wilson, Matt Cockbain (an Innisfail lad), Marco Caputo, Old Crocs own Troy Jaques, and Scott Robertson from New Zealand to name a few.

To add to this prestigious list, Bob Dwyer, a former winning World Cup coach will be the guest coach to the visitors.  He will be joined by Jim Williams, the current assistant coach of the Wallabies.

The club is also hosting a gala lunch at the Shangri-La Hotel in Cairns on Friday, 9 July, the highlight being a fundraising auction of memorabilia items from each player.

The players will also conduct junior coaching clinics on Saturday morning from 10am.
