Daintree Gateway being planned
Providing a world class visitor experience as well as expressing community aspirations will be integral to the aims of a proposed master planning scheme for the Daintree ferry precinct.
Cairns Regional Council has endorsed a business case outlining the benefits of developing a master plan to address longstanding social and environmental issues in the area just south of the Daintree River ferry crossing.
Mayor Val Schier said the precinct was the gateway to the Daintree experience for the majority of visitors to the world famous rainforest and the precinct played a pivotal role in the economic and social fabric of the locale. “Council recognises the necessity of engaging with the community so it can understand the diversity of viewpoints, values and aspirations held by locals about this sensitive area in the planning for the future,” Cr Schier said.
Division 10 Councillor Julia Leu said she was pleased that the precinct planning project was one step closer to reality. “This report contains a skilfully detailed process that takes into consideration the scope of the environmental, cultural and economic aspects in the development of a master plan for the area,” Cr Leu said.
“The final plan should ensure a gateway that is a reflection of the beauty of the surrounding world heritage area and this is the principle that should guide what we do with the precinct.”
“Community consultation is a primary concern when considering the future of the gateway and this project will provide an excellent opportunity for collaboration between Council and the local residents.”
The Daintree Gateway master planning project will ensure adherence and alignment with State government policies. Budget allocation will be made over the next two months, determining the level of Master Planning to be undertaken.
Editors Comments: As I've often said before "There's no second chance to make a first impression", and the make-shift booths and car park facilities at the current 'gateway' to the Daintree is not quite how a World Heritage area should be showcased is it? The Daintree River and Rainforest are such unique environments they surely deserve a suitable 'gateway' for both visitors and locals to feel good about.
