Division 10 Cairns Regional Councillor Julia Leu proudly launched the Mossman Heritage Walk on behalf of the Douglas Shire Historical society to an invited gathering of about 60 Douglas Region residents and dignitaries including MP for Cook, Jason O'Brien at The Daintree Inn in Mossman on Tuesday afternoon (Jan 19).

According to their President, Ray Legg, this local initiative by the Douglas Shire Historical society has been two years in the planning. The Society was assisted heavily by private local sponsorship and The Cairns Regional Council to produce and complete the installation of the 16 Photoposts around the town and the design and print of the superb DL sized full colour information brochure and map. This information brochure, for which all the artwork was done by Noel Weare, will be available, 'free', all round town to ensure that both locals and visitors can enjoy the amazing information and heritage of the area.

The driving force behind the organising committee, Cathy Jack addressed the audience and acknowledged the tremendous help of her fellow sub committee members, Billie Noli, Annette Anich and Joyce Andersen without whom this project would never have come to fruition.

The photographs used on the photoposts were sourced from a wide variety of contributors from around the area both from private collections and businesses for which the Society gratefully acknowledges the help so freely and generously given. The walk, which basically starts and finishes in the same location is approximately 2 kms in total and there are 16 photoposts to enjoy. Each photopost has a mass of fascinating information, that was pain stakingly researched to verify everything. This fascinating walk taken at a stroll will take no more than one hour with the exception of driving to the Jones Cemetery which is situated 2 kms north.

Editors Comments: After the formalities were concluded, refreshments were provided giving everyone a chance to catch up with each other and the Society to give itself a big pat on the back for a job well done. And we agree, well done !
