Big steps at Port Triathlon prove a winner for both athletes and spectators

The real highlight of this Hahn Super Dry Tri-Port event that started from the Port Douglas Surf Lifesaving Club at 10am on Sunday 31st May was the number of spectators along the route.

They came, not just from the friends and families of the participants but also from the Douglas locals plus a superb number from out of town and far away including from Mission Beach, Tolga, Townsville and even a couple from WA.

The fascination of the grueling competition over the three disciplines of 750 mtr swim, 20 kms cycle and 5 km run had many first time spectators wide eyed and breathless.

It seems that the most important thing to come out of the carefully prepared course was that all the athletes loved it. This is a major factor when promoting a triathlon, it is the test that the course sets up that is the attraction to many triathletes

Even the formidable steps up Flagstaff Hill along the running course proved to be a winner. Although the weather wasn't too kind, many of the triathletes preferred these conditions to the bright blue sunny skies and high temperatures of the previous weekend.

Swim was shortened to 450m aprox. because of rough conditions.
