Just one bang will bring in the New Year in Port Douglas

NYE FIREWORKS

A midnight fireworks spectacular will greet New Year’s Eve revellers keen to see the back end of 2020.

However, unlike previous years, there will only be one fireworks display in Port Douglas, with no earlier family friendly time slots planned.

A spokesperson from Douglas Shire Council told Newsport that, “due to uncertainty caused by COVID-19, which led to many councils across Queensland cancelling their holiday season fireworks, the usual family fun activities and fireworks will not go ahead on New Year’s Eve in Port Douglas.

“By working closely with Queensland Health, staff worked hard to ensure Douglas Shire Council is one of the few councils to deliver a midnight fireworks show for its community.

“Revellers can view the New Year’s Eve fireworks display from various vantage points and are reminded to practice social distancing wherever they may be."

Regardless, Macrossan Street is still the place to be with Douglas Shire Council working with Explosive Art to see 2020 out with a spectacular firework display at midnight on December 31.

Local businesses are hoping to make the most of the annual draw card after a tough year.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said he expects the town to be buzzing and encouraged everyone to #DoItInDouglas this year.

“Everybody loves a stunning firework display to bring in the new year with a bang,” he said.

“It has been a strange and difficult year for many people which makes it even more important to have a fireworks display to help us celebrate and enter 2021 with a fresh outlook.

“They also lure people to our local businesses which have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 this year.”
