G'day Port Douglas & Daintree: Real people, real stories
THREE MINUTES WITH A LOCAL
For the last few months, unique local stories have been shared across the region as part of the ‘G'day Port Douglas & Daintree’ video series, which is quickly gaining popularity.
Each week a different individual is featured in the three-minute videos, sharing their stories and what inspires them to live in this beautiful part of the world.
The videos include stories from Clint the cane farmer, Jake the fisherman, Port’s top cop Damian, Brett the Crocs Vice Captain, Jack the postie, Shane the butcher, Charlie the ferry deckhand, and the list goes on.
The project was started by producers Chris Beckwith and Can Kara, in conjunction with the Douglas Shire Council, FAB FM, and Newsport, with footage shot by Mac Zimmer.
Mr Beckwith told Newsport the project is continuing to grow, recently hitting 100 subscribers on YouTube, meaning it now qualifies for its own channel.

“All the videos can now be viewed together. So far 37 have been shot and there are 19 up on the channel.”
“We try to shoot three each week and hope to get 52 completed before the wet season starts.
Mr Beckwith said the Douglas Shire is well known for Port Douglas, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Daintree Rainforest, however, it is much more than that and that can be seen in the huge variety of local stories.
“It is also a community made up of many individuals, interacting with each other through children, community, and sporting groups,” Mr Beckwith said.
The video series celebrates this close-knit community as well as provides another way to interact with each other.
“It’s hearing real stories from the locals, about themselves, what they do and why they enjoy living here.

“The great thing is, everyone participating in this project at some point gets approached by strangers wanting to talk about their video and their story and that’s really great.
“It is a chance to say hi, a chance to wave and bring a smile to their face and yours, the next time you see each other.
“This is our way of recording our community and lifestyle for future generations to see,” he said.
Douglas Shire Deputy Mayor, Lisa Scomazzon, congratulated the creators of the series which also uses stunning drone footage to show off the region’s unique landscapes.
“It has given the community the opportunity to get to know some of the locals and showcase what our beautiful shire has to offer,” she said.
“We should be proud of the fact that this is not only going out into the broader community but also potentially to a national and international audience via YouTube.
“I personally look forward to more of these segments airing in the future.”
Keep an eye out for more videos featuring a range of people from hospitality workers and professionals, to community volunteers, in coming weeks.
The entire library of videos can be viewed on the G’day Port Douglas and Daintree YouTube channel.
