The Buy Douglas: Build Douglas campaign is back in time for Christmas encouraging everyone to ‘Do It In Douglas’ this festive season.

In the video above the idea of the “merry-go-round” big breakfast is featured showing how local businesses collaborate behind the scenes, so when you shop local you could really be supporting a huge array of local business, something which is extremely important after such a tough year.

Local business identities, Café Fresq owner Aoife Conway and Mossman Butcher Shane Townsend are among a crop of locals starring in the new round of Buy Douglas: Build Douglas stories, showcasing the unique and authentic community spirit of Douglas Shire.

From producers, to artists, distributors, entrepreneurs, tourist operators, to retail owners, cafes and restaurants, the latest series of videos celebrate the “merry-go-round” of community support.

Café Fresq co-owners Joanie and Aoife, who feature in the first of the videos, say the “merry-go-round” idea is how we need to think when we are supporting all the local cafes and restaurants in the Douglas Shire this Christmas.

“When you buy a big breakfast here, you support many local small businesses, as well as ours. In that one famous big breakfast we use many local suppliers, producers and growers,” she said.

“Our sausages come from Shane at Mossman Butchers, our herbs for our potato rosti come from Scomazzon Farming, we source our dairy and our butter from Brian at Dickinson’s Milk who delivers to us daily from just up the road at Craiglie.”

“We buy our pea shoot and our micro greens from Ange at Eat Shoot and Leaves who grows her shoots and sprouts organically around the corner in Mowbray and source our bread fresh daily from Nigel at Mocka’s Pies just up the road in Grant St. If you order salmon in your big breakfast it comes from Lisa and Warren at Seashells, again just down the road on Grant Street.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said Council is working with the Douglas Chamber of Commerce to breathe new life into the Buy Douglas Build Douglas campaign this Christmas period.

“As we welcome our interstate visitors back to our region, the Buy Douglas: Build Douglas campaign will provide a timely celebration of our local business community, their positivity and unwavering community spirit,” he said.

“It’s also a time to encourage everyone – from locals and to interstate visitors – to come together and help our community recover, thrive and #DoItInDouglas this Christmas.”

Douglas Chamber of Commerce Secretary Karen Smith-Marron said now was the time to shop local.

“We encourage everyone to embrace the Christmas Spirit and support our local businesses who have done it tough this year,” she said.

“By buying local, it means you are supporting a local family, growing our local businesses, creating employment and enabling our community to prosper.”
