24 hours on a bike: Local team moves for Movember

MOVEMBER

Five determined locals are putting their bodies to the test in the name of men’s mental health this Movember, by taking on the challenge of keeping the wheels on an assault air bike spinning for a full 24 hours.

Kicking off tomorrow 5 November, Katie Hill, Chris Barber, Kieran Hill, Mo Cook, and Lee Emma Norman will take turns on the assault bike, which unlike its road or indoor cycling counterparts, uses a fan to generate wind resistance, so the harder you pedal, the harder pedalling gets.

Ms Hill, who runs Katie Hill Fitness, said keeping the bike going for so long is both mentally and physically challenging and if anyone stops for a moment the bike will also stop.

“This is why we are going to make sure those pedals don’t stop for 24 hours to bring awareness to men’s mental health for Movember,” she said.

“Move for Movember is very close to all participants hearts as we have all have had someone in our life that has suffered some kind of men’s health issues, physically or mentally.

Ms Hill said not only are they trying to bring attention to mental health in general, they are also trying to grow the trend of getting men to speak up and ask for help when they need it, something which this exercise will force the team to do.

“When on the bike we are going to have to speak to each other and if one of us is struggling during the ride we will have to use our voices, put our pride and competitiveness aside and ask for help.”

A large number of local businesses have also jumped on board to support the challenge by donating over $3000 worth of vouchers that will be raffled off to raise money for the cause.

“We wanted the community to be involved as there is so much attention around the state of mental health during 2020 thanks to COVID.

“I know myself how hard this year has been on businesses and individuals, so the support we have received from the locals has been extremely generous,” Ms Hill said.

The raffle will continue to run all throughout the month of November, to support the cause and go into the draw for awesome prizes, you can buy a raffle ticket from Katie Hill Fitness.

Katie and the team would like to thank the following for their generous donations; Indigo, Mossman Gorge, Port Douglas Escape Room, Loaded PD, D-S Hair and Makeup, Beauty by Rach, Origin Espresso, Deep Yoga, Swim Fit, Far North Family Therapy, PD Gym, Sports Power, Rattle and Hum, Paddy’s, Toast, Tahitian lime, Hemingway’s, Melaleuca, Innate Cairns, Zinc, Deep Beauty, Katie Hill Fitness, Ramada, Sparrow, Cafe Fresq, and Seabean.
