The latest edition of the Port Douglas Magazine is out

The latest edition of the Port Douglas Magazine is now in market with a focus on the region’s recovery.
In its 31st issue, Newsport’s sister publication is reflecting on the great resilience of the people of the Douglas shire.
The 100-page magazine is one of the largest collective publications of business in the region and is being widely distributed in-room, throughout Port Douglas and Cairns as well as Queensland regional centres and major city distributions in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
It has been a long time coming for this edition, which was originally scheduled for release in April, however, like everything was impacted by the outbreak of COVID and its effects on the economy.
Publisher Sam Cullen said it was worth the wait and it could not have been possible without the support of the local community.
“This issue is amazing and has been a fabulous reflection of our little Shire here in Far North Queensland,” he said.
“Considered to be the worst affected tourism economy per capita, Port Douglas Daintree has begun its long road to recovery assisted by a state-wide focus to explore our own back yards. Visitors from Central and South-east Queensland wander our streets many for the first time, unable to travel abroad.
“Cairns and the Tablelands also help soften the brutal domestic and international disruption reconnecting Port Douglas’ weekend escape status.
“And our front cover represents this renewed focus on the drive market.”
Mr Cullen said JobKeeper rings loud in the region and many small businesses remain glued to Federal and State Government announcements.
“With all this staring us down, the people of Douglas Shire remain buoyant trusting in resilience formed from years of the highs and lows of operating a world-class destination on a tropical latitude,” Mr Cullen said.
With a tourism economic recovery still a long way away, flashes of silver linings continue to appear.
“International border closures have elevated aspirations for Port Douglas Daintree travel and online search appeal, bringing with it an increase in first-time travellers. It’s expected that once state borders open this interest will translate into a surge in tourism numbers.
"Visitor activity in the last 2 months to the magazine's digital versions and new Travel Planner website provide our clients with a growing confidence that border openings will deliver the anticipated southern rush.
“And this magazine edition will be in market through to March 2021, giving us fabulous exposure before and after borders re-open,” he said.
In such tough times, it was questioned whether a magazine should be released at all this year, however, it was the passion editor Sarah Cullen has for the region that spurred the magazine's publication.
Ms Cullen said the magazine is relied upon by hundreds of small businesses showcasing the best of the region’s offerings.
“It’s in these uncertain times we need to be even more relevant in the market, now with fewer overall travellers, and later when the borders open fully.”

“Whether you are exploring your own backyard or planning your next trip, Port Douglas Daintree region is flourishing. Add great food, an abundance of fresh produce, shopping and experiences abound, and your next adventure awaits.
“It is time to holiday here this year!”
