Sydney Swans set for a Port Douglas training session

AFL

Port Douglas will get a taste of the AFL action when the Sydney Swans bring a full contingent of players to town for a training session next week.

The Swans are currently staying in the Cairns ‘Hub’ ahead of their game against the Brisbane Lions at Cazaly’s Stadium on Sunday and then are due to hit the road to Port Douglas to train at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex on Tuesday 15 September.

Swans Executive GM, Charlie Gardiner, said the team will have a light training session between 10:30am and 11:30am.

“The team is really looking forward to heading up to Port Douglas for a light training session on Tuesday - and we’re grateful to the AFL for supporting the initiative,” he said.

“We’ve really enjoyed our time in the Far North so far and we would like to thank the community for the wonderful support we have received.

“We’re hoping to see plenty of red and white in the crowd when we take on the Lions at Cazaly’s Stadium on Sunday.”

Port Douglas Crocs President, Barry Lea, said Senior Coach Brad Cooper has been instrumental in liaising with the Swans to get them to visit, with help from the Douglas Shire Council.

Mr Lea said the public will be able to attend the session and see the professional players in action while they train. Strict COVIDsafe restrictions apply and everyone is reminded to social distance.

“We will have a special designated viewing area for everyone to come down and see the boys in training mode,” he said.

“It will be fantastic to witness the Swans in our own backyard.”
