Nick Gibson recognised for contribution to local basketball

Long-time local, Nick Gibson, has been recognised for his contribution to basketball in the region by being awarded the very first Life Membership Award at the Port Douglas Basketball Club.

The award recognises Mr Gibson’s commitment as President for the past seven years.

Mr Gibson helped establish the club in Port Douglas and said he is proud to see how far it has grown over the years.

“It’s great to see it gain so much popularly over the last seven years,” he said.

“The kids have a keen interest and the sport has really grown from strength to strength, so it is nice to be able to offer basketball in the Douglas Shire.”

Mr Gibson has a long history in basketball, first picking up the ball at four-years-old.

He had a stint at playing professionally in the South East Australian Basketball League in Melbourne for five years, alongside current Cairns Taipans Coach, Mike Kelly, before moving to Port Douglas.

Mr Gibson will now pass his Club President hat on but will stay on the committee to continue his voluntary work in skills development, coaching and team management.

Vice President Mick Whalen nominated Mr Gibson for Life Membership at a recent Club Annual General Meeting (AGM), much to Mr Gibson’s surprise.

“Nick has been a core part of the Port Douglas Basketball Club since it’s early days, and well and truly deserves to be our first Life Member,” Mr Whalen said.

Port Douglas Basketball is recovering well from the COVID impact and expects to be at full strength by the beginning of the next school term.

Mr Gibson added that they are always looking for more players and volunteers so if anyone is interested in local basketball, get in contact with the club on 0419 022 692.
