Celebrated artist Sam Matthews leaves her mark

Celebrated artist Sam Matthews has once again left her mark on outstanding work that will be admired.
In what can aptly be called “Life among the trees”, she spearheaded the installation of mosaics onto the extension of the toilets at Rex Smeal Park.
This complements earlier work done at the facility.
“During most of COVID19, and while DAB was closed, about 15 or so of our members were working remotely on creating ‘mosaics on mesh’ at their homes,” said Matthews.
“These mosaics, along with the hundreds of ceramic leaves and insects that were decorated by the Mossman Community Centre Monday art group; and by Dabsters in the leaf decorating workshop that was held at DAB just before the lockdown, have been installed onto the toilet block extension at Rex Smeal Park in Port Douglas.
“A total of about 45 individual people were involved in the creation of the leaves, insect and mosaics that make up the completed mosaic.”
Matthews has been living in the Douglas region for the last 25 years. She is a landscape gardener and self-taught mosaic artist jokingly referred to by friends as someone who will mosaic anything that stands still long enough.
Her mosaic projects are many and varied – including anything from shower and bathroom floors to a Jimmy Hendrix inspired psychedelic electric guitar. She works with a variety of mediums and materials depending on the project.
She joined DAB as a student to study drawing. Her art works are signed with the pseudonym “Moo”.
