Waste transfer station reopens with strict social distancing rules

RUBBISH TIP

The Killaloe Transfer Station will reopen to the public today after the Douglas Shire Council put social distancing measures in place at its waste transfer stations to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Transfer stations were closed to the general public on Saturday 4 April by Council in line with the Chief Health Officer’s directions on non-essential reasons to leave home.

However, Council has now implemented new temporary rules so that the facility can be used safely as long as social distancing requirements are met.

The new social distancing measures Include:

  • Vehicle restrictions on entry to maintain social distancing
  • Visitors and staff must keep a distance of 1.5 metres from all other people
  • No more than two people are permitted per unloading area at any one time
  • Payment via EFT or account only at Killaloe Transfer Station – no cash payments accepted
  • Users of the Transfer Stations must maintain a physical distance of at least 1.5 metres from other users and abide by the Supervisor’s instructions at all times.

These measures may mean that the average transfer station run may take longer than usual but users are urged to remain patient as measures are in place to protect everyone.

Council has also urged residents to consider whether a trip to the transfer station is essential or if it can be avoided by fully utilising household collection services.

Kerbside collections of general waste and recycling will continue unaffected.

As always the situation is evolving and may change in light of any additional advice received from the Chief Health Officer.
