Lisa Scomazzon eager to get down to business and get Shire through coronavirus

LOCAL ELECTION

Newcomer to Council, Lisa Scomazzon, is the frontrunner in the race for a councillor position and is likely to hold it with more than 70 per cent of the preliminary vote counted.

Ms Scomazzon said she is ready to get down to business and the first priority is getting the community through the tough time it is facing.

“I’m anxious to get started, it’s hard for the Shire to be waiting for results at a moment like this,” she said.

“There is a lot to do especially with coronavirus so we need to get going to protect our community.

“With so many people having lost their jobs we need to look at how Council can help ease the difficulties.

“Federal and state governments are doing as much as they can and now it comes down to local government and I think freezing our rates and fees is something we can look at doing to help our community," she said.

After coronavirus, Ms Scomazzon said her priorities would be looking at the Shire’s water security and simplifying rate structures along with some fees and charges.

She added that Council needs to look at ideas for creating new forms of revenue through projects like the development of a retirement village and the Mossman Botanic Garden to boost jobs and visitation to the region.

“We just need to get this council moving,” she said.

Ms Scomazzon added she was surprised to learn she had so far received the most votes of all the councillor candidates, currently sitting on 3792 votes or 16.42 per cent of the preliminary vote.

“I’m really proud because the ratepayers and residents of this shire have had the trust in me to be able to do the job for them,” she said.

She attributed her high number of votes to being honest with people in her entire campaign and being passionate about what she wanted to bring to the Shire.

The decision regarding the Shire’s Deputy Mayor will be made by a majority vote amongst the councillors and Ms Scomazzon indicated it is something she would be interested in with her number of votes showing the constituents have confidence in her.

“I’d like to thank everyone who have supported and voted for me and thank my husband Pete for his help and the late George Pitt who really helped convince me to run in the beginning,” she said.
