Dragons on the verge of winning third premiership in a row

SPORT

The Douglas United Football Club is on the verge of something special when they meet Atherton on Friday night at Endeavour Park in the FNQ Football Second Division Men's Final. Kick-off is at 8.15pm.

Victory will not only crown a stellar season for the Dragons who won 15 of their 18 matches, drawing one and losing only two, but it will present a hat-trick of premierships.

“To win the championship three years in a row will be something special. We do have a slight edge over Atherton beating them 2-0 two weeks ago. But this is a final and we will not be showing any signs of complacency,” said player/coach Andrew Robinson.

Robinson revealed he was not fielding his strongest side due to the unavailability of a number of players, including captain Ben Syrett.

“But we will still have a solid squad and hopefully we can get the job done,” he said. The Dragons comprise players from Australia, the UK, Italy, Argentina and Scotland.

Robinson will also be hoping to emulate the 2015 season when the Dragons won the League, Grand Final and Crad Evans Trophy treble.

The Dragons will next week again contest the Crad Evans Trophy in a match-up against the winners of the NQ Division, which comprises teams from the Townsville area. The Dragons won this trophy last year defeating Ross River.

FNQ Football covers the cities and townships from Tully in the south through to Innisfail, west to Atherton, Malanda, Dimbulah and Mareeba, throughout the city of Cairns and north to Port Douglas and includes the remote township of Weipa.

The Dragons, who played nine home games this season (on Friday night) on the same pitch used by the Reef Raiders Rugby Union team at the sporting complex, play against teams from Mareeba, Atherton, Edge Hill and Southside, among others.
