Douglas Orchid Society set to bloom this Saturday in Mossman
COMMUNITY EVENTS
The Douglas Orchid Society will be staging their Spring Orchid Show on Saturday from 8.00am at the CWA Hall, Front Street, Mossman.
Saturday’s show will be a display of spring-flowering orchids. The society’s main show is held in May each year at the Shire Hall.
Unlike the May show, there is no official judging, although there is a Popular Vote prize. Visitors will be asked to nominate their favourite plant.
There will also be a raffle, and some of the members will be selling orchids and plants.
The Douglas Orchid Society was originally started in the early 1980s by Geoff Harrison, who lived in South Mossman.
Primarily, his main interest was native orchids, but the club grew to include all species. Locals who joined the club at the time included Joan Gray, and Trevor and Cathy Ford, who are still members. The first Patron of the Society was Alec Dockrill.
The first Autumn Show was held in 1993, and the first Spring Show was held soon after. The two shows allow people to see the different types of orchids that flower at these times.
