Free mulch give-away at transfer stations later this month
GARDENING
To counter a predicted dry period, Douglas Shire Council will be providing a free mulch give-away.
Large piles of mulch will be ready for collection at the Killaloe and Newell Beach Transfer Stations from 20 to 23 September.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest climate outlook indicates a drier than average period through to November this year.
Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said using mulch was an effective water conservation technique.
“We know that using mulch is one of the best ways to grow a healthy garden and help us conserve water,” she said.
“The free mulch giveaway continues to be a very popular way to retain moisture in your garden as we head into a dry period.”
Council staff will assist with loading vehicles using appropriate mechanical equipment.
Average daily water consumption has experienced its usual increase for the peak tourist season in Port Douglas and Mossman.
• August: 11.4 ML/day
• September: 12.2 ML/day
*Average daily water consumption in December 2018 was 8.7 ML/day
Council is encouraging the community to help Council improve water resilience by being water wise. They also did not make any mention regarding possible water restrictions.
