Sustainability think tank set to transform the region

ENVIRONMENT

A Think Tank to share ideas and capitalise on the region’s skills and knowledge in a united fashion to advance the shire towards true sustainability, will be held at the CWA Hall in Mossman from 1-3pm on Saturday.

Championed by Dr Alexandra Bernhardi, a Mossman-based General Practitioner and a product of the Hannover Medical School, this is a community initiative to provide a platform for all residents to discuss pathways into a sustainable future.

“I am encouraging the community to participate as there is significant knowledge within the Shire which we can share,” said Dr Bernhardi.

“The idea of a Think Tank for the Douglas Shire is to provide a platform for everybody in this community who likes to see our region thrive.

“Thriving is only possible if we respect the three columns of sustainability

  • social
  • environmental
  • economic

“The goal of three strong pillars is quality of life and the common good; for us, but also for our children and future generations.

“With the major objective of using the knowledge and skills which we have, we want to advance the region towards true sustainability and respecting the three pillars.

“This first meeting will set the tone and the plan is to meet on a regular basis. This initial meeting will also address topics we can discuss in the future,” she said.

There are two guest speakers. Can Kara will address: Diversify - economic benefits for the Douglas Shire; and Terry Maloney will look at the role of an economic development officer.

Dr Bernhardi grew up in Germany and studied at Hannover Medical School, followed by further education in acupuncture and naturopathy.

She moved to Australia in 2005 with her three children and worked at Mossman Hospital for a year before entering private practice as a GP in 2006.

She attained Fellowship of RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practice) in 2009 and has been a member of ACNEM (Australasian College for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine) since 2015.
