Low Isles job awaits and it’s not only open to the dreamers

If you’ve ever dreamed of spending time on an island caring for its natural and heritage values, then living and working on Low Isles may be the answer.
Australia’s lead management agency for the Great Barrier Reef is now seeking submissions via a merit-based tender process for caretakers on Low Isles, located off Port Douglas.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority appoints caretakers to this carbon-neutral island in the Marine Park to ensure its natural and heritage values are maintained.
Marine Park Authority Project Manager, Field Operations, Stephanie Lemm said caretakers played an important role in protecting and presenting the values of the island.
“The caretakers are very lucky to live and work on a beautiful tropical island — on face value this looks like a dream job in paradise, but maintaining an island is hard work and island living means limiting electricity and water use which may not suit everyone,” she said.
“The caretakers are involved in everything from maintaining the light station buildings, liaising with tourist operators, cleaning compost toilets, managing weeds, and counting pied imperial pigeons.
“For this reason, we’re seeking people with experience in infrastructure maintenance and an ability to maintain the natural and heritage values of the island.”
Low Isles is a Commonwealth-owned island, managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The caretakers live and work on the island.
The caretakers play an important role in protecting the values of the Great Barrier Reef, including the Commonwealth Heritage Listed light station.
The approach to market documents are available on the Australian Government’s AusTender website (reference ID: ATM000033) and submissions must be lodged before 3pm on Monday 29 July 2019 through the process outlined on AusTender.
