Dog park and water park plan in new Council budget

DOUGLAS SHIRE COUNCIL

A dog park and a water park study in Port Douglas have been confirmed in the recent council budget as part of a huge funding package for the town.

There is also a $200,000 investment in improving the public spaces surrounding Macrossan Street.

Works on the main street include installing island garden beds at the Owen Stret intersection, laying artwork tiles to inject a rhythm of colour, rejuvenating existing garden beds with tropical species, installing vibrant up lighting and renewing of street furniture.

Council will spend a further $250,000 on fixing drainage issues and a new footpath along the northern end of Warner Street.

A further $500,000 will be spent on the Davidson footpath and cycleway from Wharf Street to the Sheraton Mirage roundabout.

Douglas Shire Council Mayor Julia Leu said the budget featured a collection of projects that will give the town a huge lift for the next 12 months.

“Council recognises that Port Douglas is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest and a popular starting point for visitors to Douglas Shire,” she said.

“Our crews will make improvements to Macrossan Street that ooze tropical character.

“We are investing in projects that locals want, visitors appreciate and fixing key issues that have been raised with us.

”We are also following on our promise to find a suitable location for a new dog park and develop a water park options report for the town.”
