VIDEO | Cape Tribulation Road open but clean-up still in progress
ENVIRONMENT
Landslips on the Alexandra Range north of the Daintree River have kept council crews busy the last few days.
Fallen trees and several large landslips closed Cape Tribulation Road to all but standard passenger vehicles and commuter buses yesterday.
The road has now re-opened to all vehicles but some sections are sill restricted to one lane and commuters are urged to plan for delays and extended travel times.
Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said Council directed significant resources to the area including backhoes, excavators, trucks and many work crews.
“The work to get the road partially re-opened was a massive undertaking that required heavy machinery and many staff,” she said.
“I have spoken to some residents who believe they have not seen such extensive damage in the area for decades and described it as a miracle the road partially opened so quickly.”
“I would like to thank our dedicated crews for their hard work under really tough conditions - Douglas Shire is right behind you.”
