“We were amazed that Port Douglas residents did not respond and endorse the event. We got the impression they did not realise the significance of what it had to offer,” said Robbin Whachell, media liaison for Eco Fashion Week Australia.

“It is for this reason we are reviewing our options and whether to return to Port Douglas. No decision has been taken, we want to talk to Council and we expect to make a decision before the end of the year.”

Leu said with any new event in a new location it is always challenging.

“Dealing with venues they were not familiar with, suppliers and supporters that the organisers had not dealt with previously, and a market that needed to be educated about the event, was a massive task which the organisers handled very well.

“Council sees this event as very important in supporting our sustainability credentials and adding to the already impressive calendar of events throughout the year. It is not every day the Douglas Shire has an international spotlight on it,” said Leu.

Whachell said a dispute involving one of the contractors will have no bearing on any future decision. 

However, Kuvan-Mills was reported saying EFWA won’t be returning [to Port Douglas] expressing her disappointment at the treatment received from a few businesses and contractors.

“We chose this location because of its unique offerings and already there has been media coverage in Canada and the Bahamas. Media from New Zealand and across Australia also attended.

“The event has already showcased this part of the world in many overseas markets and this is a huge bonus for Port Douglas,” said Whachell.?

In August this year, Douglas Shire Council Mayor Julia Leu said Eco Fashion Week Australia 2018 will be the region’s opportunity to stand up and be recognised on the world stage and Council hopes the EFWA event can become an annual fixture on the Port Douglas events calendar.
