Mossman prawn farm is more that what you see

The Mossman prawn farm will be officially opened on Friday November 23 and will become a key player in Gold Coast Marine Aquaculture (GCMA), which is one of the largest Black Tiger Prawn farming companies in Australia with an annual production capacity of close to 1,000 tonnes.


GCMA’s other farm is near the Gold Coast in South East Queensland.

Peter Regeling, a 27-year employee with the company, and project manager for the Mossman farm, said his company was looking forward to the official opening and displaying their product.


“We deliver our product to supermarket chains such as Coles, IGA and Costco. But we will not be selling our product at our Mossman location,” he said.
 

The prawns are harvested in salt water ponds.


The prawns are marketed as Gold Coast Tiger Prawns and are one of Australia’s most recognised prawns having won Gold Medals in 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002 at Sydney’s Royal Fine Food Show.


In 2010 GCMA was the first Black Tiger Prawn farm in the world to fully stock with juveniles from domesticated brood stock rather than juveniles bred from wild caught brood stock.


The farm at Mossman is the most Northern Prawn farm in Australia and the warmer climate means that it is the first farm to start harvesting in November to mid-January.
