DOUGLAS Shire Council’s recently-appointed chief executive officer Mark Stoermer has been quick to embrace the exciting times that lie ahead for the shire.

And the American-born Stoermer, who succeeds Linda Cardew, stressed the importance of communication to assist in a Council’s vision.

“This is an exciting time to be in Douglas Shire. Council is working on some pivotal projects that will complement the region’s natural beauty and deliver real economic results for the shire.

“I am a strong believer in listening to people and we need valuable community feedback to help shape these projects. I have toured the region and mixed with the people to get a grip on key issues,” he said in his first interview since assuming the role.

Stoermer joins Douglas Shire Council after a 16-month spell as CEO of Nillumbik Shire Council in Victoria. He was first appointed to the role in an acting capacity in late January 2017 and permanently two months later. He resigned in June this year to accept the Mossman position.

“I have a huge passion for preserving the environment, growing the tourism industry and diversifying the economy.

“I look forward to working closely with the Mayor and Councillors to harness this passion and deliver key outcomes for this beautiful region,” he said.

Mayor Julia Leu said Council was extremely pleased to have Mr Stoermer on board.

“Mark is a proven leader with significant local government and commercial experience. Douglas Shire Council staff and Councillors are absolutely thrilled to have such a gifted corporate executive at our helm.”
