Comedian’s Cairns swipe doesn’t go down well
RAW NERVE
COMEDIAN Tom Gleeson has told people to stay away from Cairns before endorsing Port Douglas in a sarcastic swipe on last night’s The Weekly program.
Gleeson launched a satirical tirade during his short skit on Charlie Pickering’s ABC program, describing Cairns as 'an hour south of the beautiful and infinitely better Port Douglas'.
“Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef in the same way marijuana is the gateway to meth,” he said.
He went on to slam the rainforest city as having ‘the same weather as an arm pit’ and called the hugely popular lagoon ‘the biggest urinal in Cairns’.
“If you enjoy swimming in places that’s a cross between a beach and a pool but not as good as either, then the Esplanade lagoon is for you,” he said.
He describes the only two things to do in Cairns as ‘book a flight out as soon as possible and heading out to the Great Barrier Reef’, before declaring the reef ‘dead’.
“Flights depart regularly from capital cities all over Australia, but if you’re lucky your plane will be diverted to somewhere much better.”
The segment hasn’t gone over well with The Cairns Post, who wrote a piece today slamming Gleeson as a ‘ranga’.
His response?

“My travel show #GoAway has made @TheCairnsPost crack the shits,” he said on Twitter.
It appears on this occasion the comedian may have missed the mark.
Meanwhile the compliments keep flooding in for Port Douglas with superstar singer Sherryl Crow bragging about her recent visit.
“We came to Port Douglas… about four days early, and we had the most phenomenal time,” she told The Project while on her national tour.
“You all are so lucky, this continent is just, I’ve been here so many times and the fact that you have so many different climates.
“(You have) rainforests, and beaches. It’s so unique and it really is a blessed place.”
