IT promises to be a big day of sport at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex on Saturday with the local AFL and Rugby Union teams both hosting matches.

The Port Douglas Reef Raiders will have home ground advantage after their match against Brothers was moved from Cairns to the port, while the Crocs face fierce rival South Cairns in a bumper AFL Cairns clash on the adjacent oval.

It was against Brothers that the Raiders recorded their first win of the season when they came from behind in the dying seconds to win 34-32 in a 12-a-side match.

Trailing 32-29 with time running out, the Raiders forced their way over at a lineout at the corner to edge home by the two points.

The Raiders were thankful the match went ahead. After a number of late withdrawals, Brothers agreed to a 12-a-side game.

Their match will kick off at 3pm on Saturday, while the Crocs clash will start at 2pm against the third-placed Cutters.

“Brothers are currently fifth on the ladder and we are looking forward to a competitive match,” said Raiders club president Donnie Murday.

“We’ll also see the return of hooker Dylan Leahy, who is back from South Africa, and his leadership will be invaluable.”
