Dragons make it three wins on the trot
SOCCER
THE Douglas United Dragons have made it three wins on the bounce with a comprehensive, but not always comfortable, 5-2 home win over Edge Hill last Friday night.
The Dragons were never seriously in danger of dropping the points at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex, however there were periods in each half where the Tigers put the home side under pressure and forced a number of errors which will be concerning for Dragons coach Matty McMaster.
The Dragons jumped out the gate early, controlling possession and putting Edge Hill under constant pressure.
The reward came with Adriano Gualltieri getting his first goal of the season with a crunching left foot strike which gave the keeper no chance. Minutes later it was two when Daniel Ferrero was put through on goal, making no mistake to take his season tally to four.
Instead of putting the opposition to the sword, the Dragons eased up completely and allowed Edge Hill back into the game. A poor passage of play down the Dragons right hand side left the home side exposed and the gift was not about to be turned down with Edge Hill scoring to make it 2-1. The Dragons continued to be guilty of giving the ball away and inviting pressure upon themselves right up to the half time whistle.
A few stern words at half time and a focus on returning to keeping hold of the ball saw the Dragons reassert their control on the match and again the home side was quick out of the blocks.
McMaster saw an opportunity to hit one from distance and while the strike was not the purest, a deflection left the Edge Hill keeper completely wrong-footed with the ball nestling in the back of the net. A few minutes later and a Gualtieri corner reached Chris Baker at the far post who selflessly headed back across goal to McMaster, who utterly bamboozled the Tigers keeper by rolling the ball all the way from his knee, down his shin and off the end of his toes and into the bottom corner to leave the Dragons comfortably leading at 4-1.
If there were any thoughts of an Edge Hill comeback they were squashed in the 67th minute when Daniel Ferrero picked up his second for the night, finishing off a well-constructed Dragons move. This took his tally to five goals for the season and has him sitting atop the goal scoring charts at this early stage of the season.
This score line should have seen the Dragons play out the rest of the match comfortably however comfortable is something you very rarely encounter with the Dragons. Edge Hill started throwing themselves about which seemed to unsettle the home side and they managed to get a second on the night following a goal mouth scramble.
Man of the Match went to Dan Tiffin who put in an energetic and classy performance and was unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet with a long range effort on his weaker right foot that was tipped over the bar.
Next up for the Dragons is a grand final rematch at home against Mareeba, who are the only other unbeaten side after three rounds. It promising to be an exciting, competitive and intriguing game between two sides who always battle hard but have a ton of respect for each other. Kickoff is at 7pm this Friday at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex.
