Severe thunderstorms tipped for region

SEVERE thunderstorms are possible throughout the Douglas Shire tonight as the Mossman River continues to flood at high levels.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a fresh flood warning for the river this afternoon with more rain predicted overnight.
Rainfall between 40-130mm was recorded this morning across the Mossman catchment, with up to 43mm in the Daintree catchment.
“Further showers and areas of heavy rain are expected to continue during Wednesday, with more significant rainfall developing from Wednesday evening,” BOM said in a flood warning this afternoon.

Douglas Shire residents requiring sandbags and sand can collect it from the Mossman SES shed, the Port Douglas Community Hall and the SES Shed on Oleander Drive, Wonga Beach.

Daintree River:
At this stage no flooding is forecast for the Daintree River.
The Daintree River at Daintree Village is currently at 1.55 metres and rising with the tide.
Mossman River:
River levels at Mossman have commenced to ease during Wednesday afternoon, however further heavy rain is forecast which is expected to result in renewed rises.
