Candidates risk being deserted by voters: Leu

STATE ELECTION

WITH just over a week before Queenslanders go to the polls, Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said today candidates risked being deserted by thousands of voters in the electorate, which takes in the whole Douglas Shire, if they continued to ignore residents north of Cairns.

“This is our state leaders’ chance to show some real interest and prove they are serious about our region,” she said.

And in a wish-list for candidates to consider before voters head to the ballot box on Saturday November 25, Leu listed the removal of boat wrecks from Dickson Inlet; domestic violence; dredging at the Newell Beach boat ramp; and a purpose-built health clinic north of the Daintree River as priorities.

“The derelict boats in Dickson Inlet are hazardous and an eyesore to the increasing number of boaties using the area.

“The State Government was quick to act on abandoned boats around Trinity Inlet in Cairns, but we are left to our own devices up here and have been for some time,” she said.

This follows Ms Leu’s call to aspiring politicians to commit to funding a domestic violence refuge in Mossman.

“I will continue to push for a domestic and family violence refuge in Mossman to address our alarming rates of domestic violence

“We need victims to no longer feel trapped in their own homes and cornered by their abusers,” said Leu.

Mayor Leu also highlighted that residents north of the Daintree River have lived with inadequate health services for many years.

“For too long residents have gone without a purpose-built health clinic and now is time for the state to reward their patience,” she said.

In welcoming the $300,000 funding to help fund a suitable location for a new animal shelter for Paws and Claws, she said ongoing support was still needed to get the project up.

Other issues important to the Douglas Shire include: The continuation of the Local Government Works for Qld program; More funding for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef; Continuing the early literacy program –First5 Forever program - at the public libraries; Port Douglas Road school crossing; Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program(MIPP) and  The Miallo school car park.
