Police operation underway in Wonga Beach
MAN HUNT
THERE is currently a police operation underway in Wonga Beach searching for at least one man believed to be carrying a weapon.
Heavily armed members of a Special Emergency Response Team descended on the small community north of Mossman this afternoon after reports a man was on the loose wielding a gun. It's believed the man is known to police.
The Wonga Beach State School was in lockdown today while residents were told to stay in doors.
It’s believed the operation has now moved in-and-around the airstrip down South Arm Drive. Sniffer dogs are on the scene while police units from Port Douglas and Mossman are assisting.
“There was police everywhere and I’m talking about the serious ones in full SAS style kits,” one Wonga Beach local said, who preferred to remain anonymous.
“It all looked pretty serious.”
People are being told to avoid the area until further notice.
The Wonga Beach State School declined to comment when approached by Newsport this afternoon.
Anyone with information can contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
