THE biggest movie screen north of Brisbane is heading to a cinema near Port Douglas.

Event Cinemas Smithfield is on track to open its doors next month with a brand new Vmax Theatre the star attraction.

The state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos sound and giant 21.3 metre digital screen will put moviegoers ‘into the movie’, according to cinema General Manager Lee Staddon.

“There is different channels of sounds going through 55 different speakers, so you’re going to feel it rumble,” he said.

“It has real wow-factor. The screen is bigger than most front yards.

“The location is extremely convenient for all movie lovers north of Cairns and we’ve already had a lot of people from the Douglas Shire region liking us on Facebook.”

The new six-cinema complex, just a 45 minute drive from Port Douglas, will be fully licensed and include a cocktail bar and lounge.

“You will be free to take your wine or beer into the movie with you,” Staddon said.

“That also means cocktails with the girls before the movies, or with your date. People will get a truly memorable movie experience.”

The five other traditional cinemas have also been built using leading-edge technology and design. All the latest Hollywood blockbusters will be screened in either 2D or 3D across the complex.

The cinema is part of a $29 million outdoor dining precinct at the Smithfield Shopping Centre.

"It's going to be the perfect place to catch up with friends before and after the movies," Staddon said.

An announcement on a September opening date is imminent.
