Crocodile diving ‘lying dormant’

CAGE EXPERIENCE

COMPLEX planning still needs to be done before tourists can safely eyeball a crocodile in Port Douglas, according to CaPTA Group project manager Michael Woodward.

Speaking on the proposed crocodile diving experience slated for the Wildlife Habitat, Woodward said 'there is actually no real news' on plans to create their own take on the famous Cage of Death in Darwin.

"I read construction has started which is ridiculous and certainly news to us," he told Newsport.

"It (crocodile diving) has never been taken off the table, it's just been lying dormant.

"There is no big announcement imminent as we've still got a lot of approvals and planning to get through."

The upgraded Crocarena at the Wildlife Habitat would be a smash hit for tourism in the Port Douglas region in light of increased activity and coverage of crocodiles.

The Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin is the only crocodile cage diving experience of its kind in Australia and attracts both domestic and international tourists in droves.

Woodward said nothing was likely to be completed in Port Douglas until the middle of 2018.

"We don't want to unduly build up the public expectations until it's appropriate to do so," he said.

"There is no set date on it in case things change."

The Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas has recently completed upgrades to its facilities including a new solid roof being built on the restaurant.
