Lock happy for Chappy to lead AFL Cairns All Stars

REP FOOTY

PORT Douglas spearhead Kye Chapple will lead the AFL Cairns All Stars tonight against the Indigenous-South Pacific team at Cazalys Stadium.

All Stars coach Damien Lock said it was an easy decision to name the gun forward as skipper considering his premiership heroics last year, and dominance again this campaign.

Chapple has booted 57 goals at the midpoint of the season - the most of any player in Queensland - and looks on track for a third straight triple figure finish.

“Kye’s a big forward that gets the job done week in, week out and is the current premiership captain,” Lock told Newsport ahead of tonight's match.

“He isn't a massive talker but his actions speak louder, and hopefully he can have a good night in front of the sticks.”

Chapple will be joined by Crocs teammates Mitch Bohm, Adam Gross, Kurt Bradshaw, Ethan McCullough and Jonathan Hobbs tonight, while midfielder Mathew Medcraft was selected in the Indigenous team.

Lock says the strong Port Douglas flavour for the rep match reflected the side’s superiority this season. They remain undefeated after 10 rounds.

“When a team is travelling well you naturally gravitate towards them and have a good look at their players, and try and get as many in your team as you can,” he said.

“In saying that, credit goes to Centrals Trinity Beach this year and how well they are travelling, that also reflects the amount of their players in the final 23 (they have eight).

“The training efforts and communication with the coaching staff (of the entire team) has been first class.”

An AFL Cairns Womens All Stars will take on AFL Townsville tonight in a curtain raiser to the men.
