Young gun not fazed by Coral Coast Triathlon challenge

ADVENTURE FESTIVAL

A 300m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run against seasoned competitors is a challenge by most people’s standards.

Yet 13-year-old Sophie Knight, from the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club, doesn't seem fazed in the slightest. When asked if she was nervous ahead of the Coral Coast Triathlon in Port Douglas on Sunday she simply replied:

"Not really."

The young athlete will complete in the Enticer event this weekend as part of Cairns Airport Adventure Festival.

“I’m looking forward to it,” she said on Four Mile Beach yesterday.

“I’ve done one before and it was fun.”

For her mum Dianne, however, it’s a different story. She will compete alongside Sophie for the first time and was ‘a nervous wreck’ ahead of the triathlon.

“She’s very calm that one,” Dianne said of her daughter.

“I’m a little nervous about the swim but not Sophie. She loves the waves.”

More than 1600 competitors will converge on Port Douglas on Sunday for the Coral Coast Triathlon, RRR Mountain Bike Challenge and Hekili Ocean Challenge.

The action kicks off on Four Mile Beach and acts as the lead in to next Sunday’s (June 11) Ironman Cairns event, which sees the cycle leg fly through town and down Macrossan Street.

Conditions are meant to be a little windy this Sunday, which won’t deter young Sophie in the slightest.
