Crocs' pink day out ‘bigger than footy’: Bradsworth

PINK DAY

PORT Douglas has ‘broken all records’ for its annual Pink in the Tropics fundraiser match for breast cancer.

The club produced its biggest ever gate, bar and canteen takings as people turned up in droves to witness yet another thumping AFL Cairns win by the Crocs.

Port Douglas president Chris Bradsworth said the club was overwhelmed by the support of the local community.

“We were just blown away by the success of the day,” Bradsworth said.

“We raised over $8000 for the Pink in the Tropics fundraiser and the club will be putting another significant contribution towards it.

“We actually ran out of Great Northern twice. It’s certainly going to be hard to top next year but this community never ceases to amaze us.”

In what was an emotionally charged day, popular Port Douglas mother-of-two Laura Gray tossed the coin before the senior match.

Laura is currently fighting her own battle with breast cancer and, along with her husband Danny, are huge backers of the Crocs. Their Rattle n Hum business is the club’s major sponsor.

“For Laura to toss the coin was just amazing,” Bradsworth said.

“She knows she has the support of the entire community, but for her to walk off the ground and see a sea of pink, and then realise it was all for her, was a special moment.

“She has been extremely tough.”

Another week, another crushing Port Douglas win

Meanwhile, Port Douglas held up its end of the bargain by cruising to another crushing win over Cairns Saints.

In a demoralising stat for the rest of the competition, it was the third time this year the Crocs have kicked over 200 points.

They toyed with their opposition at times at the Croc Pit on their way to a 127-point massacre of the Saints, with captain Kye Chapple turning heads with a 16-goal haul.

The star skipper was spoon-fed all afternoon thanks to some pin-point supply further up the field. Mathew Medcraft, Sam Scally, Cole Laurie and Jordan Chapman were all dominant in the 32.15 (207) to 12.8 (80) triumph.

The Saints are a perennial power of the AFL Cairns competition having won six of the last nine premierships.

“There wouldn’t be many occasions when the Saints have had 200 points scored against them, so they’d be hurting,” Bradsworth said.

"Our boys continue to take all before them and, as a club, we have a very strong model which is working well for us.”
