Council showing team colours for Mossman youth

TEAM SPIRIT

DOUGLAS Shire Council workers are raising money for the Mossman Youth Centre as part of the ‘Jersey Fine Day’ initiative.

All of Council’s 160-plus staff will be encouraged to wear their favourite team outfit next Friday March 10 and contribute a gold coin to assist the Mossman Youth Centre team fund their amazing projects for local kids.

Operations General Manager Nick Wellwood said Council hoped to make the Jersey Fine Day a regular initiative as a fun way to encourage teamwork and also raise much-needed funds for local organisations.

“As North Queenslanders we are all sports made so it’s a great opportunity for our staff to proudly wear their team colours while supporting a great local charity,” Wellwood said.

“Whether it’s netball, AFL, rugby league or union, soccer, basketball or fishing, we love to get behind our teams and clubs and Council through our great team of employees hopes to raise hundreds of dollars for our local youth and also have fun in the workplace.

“We’re also hoping other local businesses can see the benefits of the initiative and be encouraged to do something similar with their teams to raise funds for worthy local causes.

“The only stipulation we have is that anyone who wears a NSW Blues jersey will be ‘fined’ $10 rather than a gold coin as you should have to pay extra to get away with that in this part of the world.”

Mossman Youth Centre coordinator Sara Harris said she was overwhelmed by the offer which will be utilised to expand outreach services.

“Our outreach services are limited and there are issues with local youths in particular related to bullying and anger management and this donation will help us to secure the appropriate resources to address this,” Harris said.
